Trailblazers: The Dark Side of Barbie

Published

by Ashley Morrison

*Barbie is one of the most famous dolls, and even personalities, in the world. Girls, boys, women and men we've all heard of her and we all know that she lives in a fantastic world of clothes for every occasion, convertible sports cars and sunshine bouncing off her blonde hair. And, of course, she has the "perfect" boyfriend: Ken. There's even been songs written about her; albeit not very good ones.

But now, Vancouver-based photographer Dina Goldstein has created a series of pictures which portray the dark side of this glamorous, plastic, ageless good-time girl.

Inventive, funny and tragic all at once, In The Dollhouse is almost a social commentary on the private life of Barbie and Ken and their loveless and artificial, in more ways than one, relationship. Behind closed doors, all is far from what it would seem to the public gaze. According to Goldstein's vision, they have a deeply troubled relationship: Ken is grappling with his own sexuality and Barbie is left feeling alone and emotionally destroyed. So much so that...well, you'll see.

A picture says a thousand words, so I will leave you the story of Barbie and Ken behind closed doors: In The Dollhouse.

I’ve always loved magic, things that seemingly disappear into thin air and come back again. As a kid watching Saturday night TV, I would be dazzled by the likes of David Nixon, Paul Daniels and Ali Bongo. They sparked my imagination and belief...
